"O Come All Ye Faithful"

Also known in Latin as "Adeste Fidelis", this Christmas carol is credited to an English hymnist named John Francis Wade (1711-1786). Written originally in Latin, 'O Come All Ye Faithful', it was penned as a hymn by an Englishman called John Wade. In Latin, it is known as 'Adeste Fideles'. Another Englishman called John Reading composed its music in early 1700s, which was first published in 'Cantus Diversi' in 1751. Rev. Frederick Oakley translated it to English in 1841.

"We Three Kings"

Written by Rev. John Henry Hopkins (1820-1891) in 1857, he wrote both the music and lyrics of this carol. In 1863 the said Christmas carol was published in Rev. Hopkins' Carols, Hymns and Song. "We Three Kings" was written for the General Theological Seminary in New York during their Christmas pageant.
Interesting Fact: Aside from being a writer and editor, Hopkins was also a stained glass artist and book illustrator.

We three kings of Orient areBearing gifts we traverse afar
Field and fountain, moor and mountain Following yonder star
O Star of wonder, star of nightStar with royal beauty bright

Westward leading, still proceedingGuide us to thy Perfect Light

"Good Christian Men Rejoice"

Words: Heinrich Suso (?-1366); Folklore has it that Suso, hearing angels sing these words, joined them in a dance of worship. This song has survived several complex revisions since its anonymous fourteenth-century creation. In 1601, Bartholomaeus Gesius wrote a modern arrangement of the traditional tune, now called "In Dulci Jubilo." Later, Johann Sebastian Bach included Gesius's theme in his Chorale Preludes for the organ. In its next generation, Sir John Stainer made further refinements to the tune under its new title, "Nun singet und seid froh." The Christmas song that we enjoy today is courtesy of Reverend Dr. John Mason Neale, who translated the lyrics into English from German.

"Tell me the Story of Jesus"

This great hymn was written by Fanny Crosby, here is some short information on her testimony:
The story of Fanny Crosby is one of sorrow, yet of the deepest love. At the age of six weeks old, Fanny developed an eye infection. The family physician was unavailable so another physician was called. He applied hot mustard poultices to the baby’s eyes. This caused severe burns to Fanny’s eyes and she was permanently blind from then on.Fanny never felt bitter but instead grew into a young woman who “saw” God in everything around her and in every circumstance that life handed to her. Although she was physically blind, Fanny had the keenest of spiritual sight…which is reflected in her 9,000 plus hymns. Her love for God and her eagerness to share with others what Christ had done for them brought countless numbers to Christ.

"The First Noel"

The word Nowell comes from the French word Noël meaning "Christmas", from the Latin word natalis ("birth"). It may also be from the Gaulish words "noio" or "neu" meaning "new" and "helle" meaning "light" referring to the winter solstice when sunlight begins overtaking darkness.

"Your Grace is Enough"

Matthew "Matt" Maher is a singer/songwriter/worship leader originally from Newfoundland, Canada, who later relocated to Mesa, Arizona. He has written and produced 3 independent albums, The End and The Beginning (2001), Welcome to Life (2003), and Overflow (2006). All three albums were produced by Maher, with Welcome to Life and Overflow both being co-produced by Maher and Nashville engineer Jeff Thomas.

Matt is most known for his song, "Your Grace Is Enough" which Chris Tomlin recorded on His 2004 Gold release, Arriving. The two met at a Youth Specialties conference held in Phoenix when Tomlin's band was asked to "back" Maher up. Tomlin instantly fell in love with the song. Since then, the song has become a popular worship anthem. Matt recorded a new version of the song, combining both his and Tomlin's versions, for the album "Empty and Beautiful". The song was released as a single on iTunes in March 2008, and reached #2 on Billboard's Adult Christian Contemporary Chart, where it remained in the top ten for over 8 weeks.

"O How I love Jesus"

Frederick Whitfield was an Anglican clergyman who lived from 1829-1904. The hymn he wrote, "Oh, How I Love Jesus", became a favorite in the evangelistic crusades of Moody and Sankey. It originally had 8 stanzas but only 4 are found in most hymn books. It was first written in tract form in 1855. The entire hymn revolves around the name of Jesus. What a powerful name! The name of Jesus promises us great things from the Father. It promises to be with us in every circumstance. How we should love Jesus for all the great things He has done and is doing for us.
There is a name I love to hear, I love to sing its worth;
It sounds like music in mine ear, the sweetest name on earth. It tells me of a Savior's love, who died to set me free;

It tells me of His precious blood, the sinner's perfect plea. It tells me what my Father hath in store for eve'ry day,
And tho' I tread a darksome path, yields sunshine all the way.
It tells of One whose loving heart can feel my deepest woe,
Who in each sorrow bears a part, that none can bear below.
Oh, how I love Jesus, Oh how I love Jesus,
Oh, how I love Jesus, Because He first loved me!

"Come Thou Long Expected Jesus"

Charles Wesley wrote over 6,000 hymns. Like most hymnists, his works were frequently altered. In the preface to the 1779 Collection of Hymns for the Use of the People called Methodists, his brother John wrote:
I beg leave to mention a thought which has been long upon my mind, and which I should long ago have inserted in the public papers, had I not been unwilling to stir up a nest of hornets. Many gentlemen have done my brother and me (though without naming us) the honour to reprint many of our hymns. Now they are perfectly welcome to do so, provided they print them just as they are. But I desire they would not attempt to mend them, for they are really not able. None of them is able to mend either the sense or the verse. Therefore, I must beg of them these two favours: either to let them stand just as they are, to take things for better or worse, or to add the true reading in the margin, or at the bottom of the page, that we may no longer be accountable either for the nonsense or for the doggerel of other men.
In addition to hymn writing, Charles and John founded the movement which became the Methodist denomination.

Come, Thou long expected Jesus Born to set Thy people free; From our fears and sins release us, Let us find our rest in Thee Israel’s Strength and Consolation, Hope of all the earth Thou art; Dear Desire of every nation, Joy of every longing heart.

"My Desire"

This song was written by Kirk Franklin. Born out of wedlock to teenage parents who never married or lived together, he had sporadic contact with his parents while he was growing up. When he was three, Franklin's mother put him up for adoption at a Fort Worth church. His great- aunt Gertrude Franklin, who was then in her mid 60s, took him in and eventually adopted him, insisting that he get involved in her church and in its youth activities, especially the choir. Growing up in the church under his great-aunt's watchful eye gave Franklin the drive to excel in the choir. By the age of seven, his innate talent had earned him the opportunity to pursue a gospel music recording contract. His great-aunt expressly forbade this, citing Franklin's extremely young age. A mere four years later, Franklin had attained the rank of minister of music at the Mt. Rose Baptist Church. In this position, he was responsible for all of the music for all of the choral groups at the church.
While was growing up, the choir and its attendant lifestyle were still more of a sideline to Franklin than his life's vocation. Commenting on this to Morthland, Franklin said; "I was always a moody child. In the house, it was just me and an older woman. When I got around my peers, I just went buck wild, because I wanted to be a kid, you know?" Hedonism filled Franklin's days when he was not in church. His rebellious antics included fighting, hanging around with gang members, hanging out at pool halls, causing trouble at school, fighting, and smoking marijuana.
When he was 16, Franklin's friend, 17-year-old Eric Pounds, was killed when his parents' gun fell from the top of the closet and accidentally discharged. Devastated, Franklin sought solace from the church, reading the Bible, and getting more involved in music. The following year, Franklin's faith was tested again when he got his girlfriend pregnant. Franklin told Allison Samuels of Newsweek: "those two things changed my life and got me in touch with the Lord and the Lord's music." He added to Morthland that "what I had done {getting his girlfriend pregnant out of wedlock} was wrong, but God forgave me, so I was able to forgive myself." Franklin's girlfriend gave birth to a son named Kerrion. She raised him by herself until early 1996. It was then that Franklin decided to do for his son what was never done for him. "I didn't want my son raised like I was. I wanted him to know his father," he explained to Morthland.

"Blessed Be Your Name"

This powerful worship song by Matt Redman has a phrase that is based on Job 13:15. The Message translates it like this
"So hold your tongue while I have my say, then I'll take whatever I have coming to me.Why do I go out on a limb like this and take my life in my hands?Because even if he killed me, I'd keep on hoping. I'd defend my innocence to the very end. Just wait, this is going to work out for the best—my salvation!"

"This is My Fathers' World"

These lyrics were written by Maltbie D. Babcock around 1901. While a pastor in Lockport, New York, Babcock liked to hike in an area called “the escarpment,” an ancient upthrust ledge near Lockport. It has a marvelous view of farms, orchards, and Lake Ontario, about 15 miles distant. It is said those walks in the woods inspired these lyrics. The title recalls an expression Babcock used when starting a walk: “I’m going out to see my Father’s world.”
This is my Father’s world, and to my listening ears
All nature sings, and round me rings the music of the spheres.
This is my Father’s world: I rest me in the thoughtOf rocks and trees, of skies and seas; His hand the wonders wrought. This is my Father’s world, the birds their carols raise,
The morning light, the lily white, declare their Maker’s praise.
This is my Father’s world: He shines in all that’s fair;
In the rustling grass I hear Him pass;He speaks to me everywhere. This is my Father’s world. O let me ne’er forget
That though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet.
This is my Father’s world: the battle is not done:
Jesus Who died shall be satisfied,And earth and Heav’n be one.

Found in Your hands, fullness of joy Every fear suddenly wiped away
Here in Your presenceAll of my gains now fade away
Every crown no longer on display, here in Your presence
Heaven is trembling in awe of Your wonders
The kings and their kingdom are standing amazed
Here in Your presence, we are undone Here in Your presence,
Heaven and Earth become one
Here in Your presence, all things are new
Here in Your presence, everything bows before You
Wonderful, beautiful, glorious, matchless in every way.

A doxology (from the Greek doxa, glory + logos, word or speaking) is a short hymn of praise to God in various Christian worship services, often added to the end of canticles, psalms, and hymnsThis doxology has widespread use in English circles, in some Protestant traditions commonly referred to simply as "The Doxology" and in others as “The Common Doxology”, is:Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow;Praise Him, all creatures here below;Praise Him above, ye Heavenly Host;Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

This text, which was originally the seventh and final stanza of "Glory to thee, my God, this night", a hymn for evening worship written by Thomas Ken in about 1674, is usually sung to the tune Old 100th, but also to Duke Street by John Hatton, Lasst uns erfreuen, and The Eighth Tune by Thomas Tallis, among others.

“A Mighty Fortress is our God”

(German, Ein' feste Burg ist unser Gott) is the best known of Martin Luther's hymns. Luther wrote the words and composed the melody sometime between 1527-1529.[ It has been translated into English at least seventy times and also into many other languages. The words are a paraphrase of Psalm 46.The most popular English version, "A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing," was translated by Frederick H. Hedge in 1853. Another popular English version by Thomas Carlyle begins "A safe stronghold our God is still."

"On Eagles Wings"

"On Eagles' Wings" is a sacred song composed by Michael Joncas in 1979 after Vatican Council II, when the Catholic Church began using vernacular hymns at Mass. Its words are based on Psalm 91. The song was then published by North American Liturgy Resources and was later purchased by New Dawn Music, a subsidiary of Oregon Catholic Press. It quickly proved to be quite popular as a contemplative song at Catholic Masses as well as at Protestant services; it is now sung in churches of many denominations including Pentecostal churches and was performed at many of the funerals of victims of September 11. It is often performed either at the beginning or the ending of a Roman Catholic Funeral Mass.

by Michael Joncas
1. You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord, who abide in his shadow for life, say to the Lord: "My refuge, my rock in whom I trust!"
And he will raise you up on eagle's wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of his hand.
2. The snare of the fowler will never capture you, and famine will bring you no fear: under his wings your refuge, his faithfulness your shield.
3. For to his angels he's given a command to guard you in all of your ways; upon their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.

"Everlasting God"

Brenton Brown wrote this song after both he and his wife had being diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Brown described their illness in the following excerpt from Christianity today. Brown: It's called fibromyalgia, a form of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. What defines it are the symptoms, the most obvious ones [being] fatigue. You feel jet-lagged most of the time. There are other symptoms like nausea, muscle pain, muscle aches. There's no known cure. Basically it was just like waking up one day and finding out that I had someone else's body. Very strange. I wasn't thinking as clearly. And over the last three years we've basically had to relearn how to live life with our new bodies. It's been a challenge. Chronic Fatigue is a little bit like having mono[nucleosis]. You feel very fatigued, very drained. And no matter how much you sleep, you're still going to feel tired. You can never shake off that tired feeling. I just kept going for six months. And then my pastor, the board of our church and the group of doctors that I was seeing all decided, "This is not working. You're not going to be able to force your way through this." Brenton Brown, born in South Africa, is a Christian songwriter and worship leader. He left South Africa for Oxford, England in his early twenties on a Rhodes Scholarship. While studying politics, philosophy and theology he joined the Vineyard music (UK), serving as worship pastor at the Oxford Vineyard, UK, and eventually as coordinator of the Vineyard (UK) Worship Development Team. His songs, Lord Reign in me, All who are thirsty, Humble King, Hallelujah [Your love is amazing] and Holy were recorded on the popular Vineyard UK projects during this time. He has since left the UK and now lives in Malibu, California with his wife, Jude. Brenton is an artist on the worship label Survivor and in 2006 released his first solo album, Everlasting God with Survivor in the UK and rest of the world, and with Sparrow in the United States and Canada.

"You never let Go"

This powerful new song by Matt Redman has been described as follows from Christianity Today:
"You Never Let Go" begins with a quiet piano and moody atmospherics that mirror far-from-ebullient lyrics based on Psalm 23: Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death/You're perfect love is casting out fear/And even when I'm caught in the middle of the storms of this life/I won't turn back, I know you are near…The chorus is a loud, exultant proclamation that God will never let go of us and in it Redman uses the minor-key construction to subtly (and maturely) declare that God's love is still valid, even in the midst of pain.

Your perfect love is casting out fearAnd even when I’m caught
in the middle of the storms of this lifeI won’t turn back I know You are near
And I will fear no evil For my God is with me And if my God is with me
Whom then shall I fear? Whom then shall I fear?Oh no, You never let go

"O Love that Will not Let me Go"

George Matheson began to lose his sight before he was a year old; at 17 he was almost completely blind. A brilliant student in spite of this handicap, he gained his B.A. at the University of Glasgow in 1861, his M.A. in 1862, and a B.D. in 1866. He was ordained in 1868 and appointed as parish minister at Innelan, Argyll, on the Firth of Clyde. In the manse there on June 6, 1882, he was, he says, “Suffering from extreme mental distress and the hymn was the fruit of pain.” This pain was not caused by a broken engagement, as that had happened about 20 years earlier, but it might have been a bereavement or his concern over the inroads that Darwinism was making in the church.
This hymn was written very quickly in the space of minutes only, as though it was dictated by an inward voice, and not revised or retouched afterwards. The one exception that was later suggested and agreed upon was in the third stanza where “I climb” now reads “I trace.” In spite of the author’s statement that it was written in 1882, June 1881 may be the correct date. The words, as in most of Matheson’s poems, are not easy to understand on first reading, but become clearer after much thought. The text uses metaphors for a God who will not leave His child forsaken: first Love, then Joy, then the Cross.

Offertory this Sunday is "How Beautiful" by Sue Ann Sullivan:

Born in 1958 Twila Paris is often compared to famed songwriter Fanny Crosby for her musical homage to God, Twila Paris is among "modern inspirational music's most prolific singer-songwriters," according to Thom Granger in the All Music Guide. She has frequently been referred to as "the modern-day hymn-writer" and has written and recorded many charting singles in Christian music since the early 1980s, including more than 30 number-one hits. Her songs are gentle prayers put to music, with an up-tempo soft rock sound that closes the gap between traditional and contemporary inspirational music

Paris is often cited as one of the foremost trailblazers of the modern hymn style and one of the only living hymnists in the tradition of hymn-writing set forth in England and the United States decades prior. Some of Paris' songs have been included in the hymnals by a variety of churches including the United Methodist church and various Charismatic churches. Paris was heavily influenced in her early career by the music of Keith Green, Kelly Willard, and Jamie Owens-Collins. Her #1 single, "Do I Trust You" was written in response to Keith Green's untimely death in 1982. Willard and Owens-Collins sang background vocals for her on her Keeping My Eyes On You album.

How Beautiful the hands that served The Wine and the Bread and the sons of the earth
How beautiful the feet that walked The long dusty road and the hill to the cross
How Beautiful, how beautiful, how beautiful is the body of Christ

How Beautiful the heart that bled That took all my sins and bore it instead
How beautiful the tender eyes That choose to forgive and never despise
How beautiful, how beautiful, how beautiful is the body of Christ
And as He lay down His life We offer this sacrifice
That we will live just as He died Willing to pay the price
Willing to pay the price

How Beautiful the radiant bride Who waits for her Groom with His light in her eyes
How Beautiful when humble hearts give The fruit of pure love so that others may live
How beautiful, how beautiful, how beautiful is the body of Christ
How beautiful the feet that bring The sound of good news and the love of the King
How Beautiful the hands that serve The wine and the bread and the sons of the Earth
How Beautiful, how beautiful, how beautiful is the body of Christ

Behind the Praise - Sunday November 9, 2008

"My Savior Lives"
This is a new song by Jon Egan & Glenn Packiam of the New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Co. When asked about writing songs for the church in an interview Jon shared the following.

Those songs were written out of innocence just to equip our own church. I think that probably is the reason for the success. The heart of these songs, the heart of us as worshippers or worship leaders, has always been to help our people in our spheres of influence. The fact that it's equipped the Church beyond our church is overwhelming, wonderful, and humbling. Jared: We weren't really following anyone into it; we were just excited about what God was doing. We started to try our own songs at times other than Sunday morning. We just put it out there to see if it would live. It began that way, and it crept into the culture of Sunday morning.

"You are Holy"

The worship choir will share this song from the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir:

Lord our eyes are weak and we’re blinded
To the truth of who we are every time we look, we’re reminded
of the things that stains our hearts

For you are Holy, holy, holy are you Lord
Lord You are worthy, worthy, worthy are you Lord

Lord your mercy comes like the morning and your light dispels my dark
Lord I won’t give up your love that restores me and am humbled by your heart

For you reign majesty and we’re all on bended knees to praise you
All of our days, may the stories of our lives be worship in your eyes
Let our hearts shout of your glory

Much of his focus tends to be in indigenous settings working amongst the poor, as well as facilitating leadership development and the fostering of originality in song writing and the arts in various cultural settings.David has several worship songs published that are standards in Church worship, most notably "You're Worthy of My Praise" and "Every Move I Make". He recently released his latest CD, “When Justice Shines” through ION Records (ionworship.org). David has also authored two books with Regal Publishing - "The Worship God Is Seeking" and more recently "The Justice God Is Seeking".At this point David is giving significant focus to music and the creative aspects of his calling, which involve music production, writing, and composition. David continues to travel internationally both speaking and leading worship. A burning passion for the Ruis family is the discovery of the practical and theological integration of creative worship expression within community that is engaged in a lifestyle that interfaces with the issues of poverty and social injustice.David, his wife Anita and their four children currently reside in the Los Angeles area.

“Spirit of the Living God”

Daniel Iverson (Born: Brunswick, Georgia, USA September 26 1890; Died: Asheville, N.Carolina, USA January 3 1977
Daniel Iverson was educated at the University of Georgia, the Moody Bible Institute Chicago, Columbia Theological Seminary Decatur Ga., and the University of South Carolina. He was ordained a Presbyterian minister in 1914, and served churches in Georgia and in South and North Carolina. He organized the Shenandoah Presbyterian Church in Miami, Florida, in 1927; and ministered there until retiring in 1951. In the spring of 1926 Daniel Iverson, a Presbyterian pastor from Lumberton, North Carolina, visited a friend who was conducting a revival in Orlando, Florida. One evening Iverson was extremely moved by the sermon he had heard on the Holy Spirit, and he wrote a hymn that Christians have been singing ever since. Iverson died in Montreat in 1977, but we are still singing his hymn. Spirit of the living God,
Spirit of the Living God fall fresh on me;Spirit of the living God,fall fresh on me.Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me.Spirit of the living God,fall fresh on me.

"Glory Come Down"

Jason Upton is a unique worship leader. His worship is raw, unconventional and truly an experience with God. He wants to lead people to Jesus and not religion. A central theme to Jason's testimony is the revelation of the spirit of adoption.
Jason says when you don't know your blood line it changes everything – how you look at relationships, lines of family, racial relationships. He knows this first hand because Jason was put up for adoption after he was born. A few months later, he was adopted by a Christian couple and was brought up in the ways of God.
As an adult, he requested a file from the adoption agency that placed him and received a letter from his birth mother. Jason found out that she prayed that he’d be brought up in a two-parent home, that they would know Jesus and that they would follow the Lord’s leading in the development of his life.
God answered his birth mother’s prayer in a wonderful way, giving Jason a love of the Lord that is expressed in music. In the Kingdom of God, God adopts us as His children. We can't be disowned or disinherited, and we don't look at physical blood lines. We see the relationships as God sees them. We have the connection of being adopted as God's children.
When Jason met his biological family, it didn't change things with his adoptive family. He met his biological mother last year. He found out that she was a Christian and had listened to his music for six years and didn't know Jason was her son. He was able to meet his biological father, who is not a Christian, but is a Cherokee Indian.

“Saved, Saved”

This gospel song is based on the verse in Psalm 116:6 “When I was in great need, He saved me”. Written by Jack Scholfield in 1911 you can hear a recording of the song here www.sermonaudio.com/hymn_details.asp?PID=savedsaved

I’ve found a Friend, who is all to me,
His love is ever true;I love to tell how He lifted me
And what His grace can do for you.

Saved by His power divine,Saved to new life sublime!
Life now is sweet and my joy is complete,For I’m saved, saved, saved!

He saves me from every sin and harm,Secures my soul each day;I
’m leaning strong on His mighty arm;I know He’ll guide me all the way.

When poor and needy and all alone,In love He said to me,
“Come unto Me and I’ll lead you home,To live with Me eternally.”
